The Mines Afire

1869438876My story

This book is about a true disaster that happened on the west coast in 1896

Tommy Carter is a typical boy living in the West Coast mining town of Dobson in

1896. He goes to school, loves playing in the local band and catching eels with his friends in the Grey Valley creeks. Most of the men in Dobson work in the mines. The work is hard and the men are paid only per ton of coal, not for the hours worked. Tommy is not at all keen to follow his Uncle Fred down into the mine. The conditions are dangerous. One day a terrible explosion occurs in the mines and causes it to collapse. Many of the men and boys lose their lives on this day, despite heroic attempts by rescuers to

Save them. Tommy loses his Uncle, some friends, and his father is left seriously ill after the disaster. The town is left unhappy. Many

Women are widowed and children are left with no father. What is to become

Tommy’s Aunty Edith whose husband Fred has died? Will Tommy have to work in the mine when he leaves school, despite the dangers?

I would suggest this book to people around 12 and up.

The Encyclopedia Of Immaturity is my favorite book. In it are over 300 tutorials and over 50 activities to do.  My favourite pages in the book are “Insulting like Shakespear” learn how to potty-mouth like the King of Oral arts, “How to Sneak Around” Become unseen by learning real techniques that detectives and spies do, know the Official rules of Ginx. It’s the complete guide on how to never grow up! I recommend this book to people who like to laugh and have quirky attributes in their personality.

I Am David By Anne Holm

David
This is an enticing book about a refugee, David, who was trapped in a concentration camp in the Second World War, but with help he escapes, but only to find new challenges, enemies and countries. This book is great for any one who has patience as it takes a while for the action to happen, but when it does it is well worth it, this story follows a life of a small boy trying to escape the world.

I am reading this as my novel study.
