The 10 PM Question By Kate De Goldi
Realistic Fiction August 20th, 2009This book is about a boy called Frankie Parsons. He’s a 12 year old boy who has a worrying problem.
Are the smoke alarm batteries flat?
Does the cat (The Fat Controller), and therefore the rest of the family, have worms?
Will bird-flu strike and ruin life as we know it?
Is the kidney-shaped spot on his chest actually a galloping cancer?
Do you see what I mean?!!? Even though there’s six people that are extremely significant in his life, Uncle George (Dad), Louie (his brother), Gordana (his sister), his Great-Aunts, Alma, Teen and Nellie, his Ma and his best friend Gigs, Ma is the only one who really cares about his questions!
But his world is turned upside down when a new girl arrives at school. Sydney is full of questions, relentless, unavoidable questions.
I recommend this book for people 10 and up.

Hi Aidan. I’m pleased to see you have enjoyed your book that you received as a NZ Post Duffy Book Award.
Your review really has me hooked! Do you think that this book would appeal to adults? Would it be one that I might enjoy, do you think? Why or Why not?

Dear Mrs Senior,
As I said people 10 and up.
It would really appeal to adults, but not as much as it appealed to me!!!
Adults might like it because its very humorous.

Hi Aidan, Kate De Goldi here…it was a buzz to see your review – it was so succinct and positive!…I tried to imagine I wasn’t me, and decided I would definitely want to read the book as a result of what you wrote…a writer’s dream comments…I’m glad you found it funny, too….I thought writing about anxiety in a moderately humorous way would be a more powerful way of communicating Frankie’s difficulties.
It’s incredibly nice to get feedback from a reader – doesn’t happen all that often – so I’m most chuffed…thanks so much. Hope you’re reading something else new and wonderful now…Have you read Millions by Frank Cottrill Boyce…I think you might enjoy that – very funny and poignant at the same time….warmest wishes, Kate

Hi Aiden
I have read this book and I’m 38. This is a lot older than 10. However, I loved it. I cried and laughed and couldn’t put it down and I feel confident other adults would enjoy it too. The characters were very compelling and for a book that dealt with some tough issues, it was full of hope. Anyway – thanks for your review. Gina
